Tmima was born in Vilnius, Lithuania and moved to Israel. At sixteen she was accepted on a full scholarship to Bezalel Academy of Arts, Jerusalem, Israel. The teachings were based on the Bauhaus methods.

After graduating, Tmima received the American-Israeli Cultural Foundation Scholarship. Tmima continued studying in Italy and Paris. Her early works include drawings and paintings. She moved to New York City and starting working on sculptures.
